Happy to have contributed as an Independent Evaluation Expert to the Nigeria GEF–UNIDO Industrial Energy Efficiency and Resource Efficient Cleaner Production (IEE/RECP) project at its closure. The assignment provided a rigorous platform to interrogate results, validate impact, and assess the extent to which cleaner production principles are being embedded within Nigeria’s industrial ecosystem. I am deeply appreciative of the institutional leadership and collaboration of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Federal Ministry of Environment, and the Energy Commission of Nigeria, whose roles were pivotal in translating project ambition into measurable progress. I also extend sincere appreciation to the over 40 participating companies whose commitment translated project objectives into real operational gains. Notably, organisations such as Promasidor Nigeria, Nestlé Nigeria, Cutix Plc, Nigerian Foundries Limited, Gongoni Company Limited, Dala Foods and Turaren Hausawa demonstrated strong leadership in adopting energy-efficient and resource-efficient practices. Their willingness to engage, invest, and adapt underscores the critical role of industry actors in driving sustainable transformation. Equally commendable is the contribution of academia, particularly the Bayero University Kano Centre for Renewable Energy Research, in strengthening technical capacity and supporting knowledge transfer. Together, these institutions exemplify the collaborative ecosystem required to advance cleaner production across Nigeria’s industrial landscape. I had the privilege of conducting the mid-term evaluation with Rebecca Gunning and the terminal evaluation with Stefan Melinsky—international experts that brought both analytical depth and global relevance to the evaluation process. Special recognition to the coordinating team at UNIDO HQ in Vienna, alongside my chief Yomi Banjo, Project Manager Karin, and Project Desk Coordinator Ndivhuho(aka minister of...); from the regional office, UNIDO Representative to the ECOWAS Ambassador Philbert Johnson, Program Officer Dr. Reuben Bamidele for their professionalism and strategic oversight. The central lesson is clear: achieving industrial sustainability at scale in Nigeria demands more than pilot successes—it requires institutionalisation, policy coherence, and decisive private sector ownership. Sincere appreciation to the Global Environment Facility for its catalytic support in advancing industrial sustainability globally, and the Government of Nigeria for its leadership and commitment to cleaner production
